Amazon Price Reaches 2024 High, Jeff Bezos Sells $2billion Worth of Shares

As of February 2024, Amazon has a market cap of $1.751 Trillion. This makes Amazon the world’s 6th most valuable company by market cap. The market capitalization, commonly called market cap, is the total market value of a publicly traded company’s outstanding shares and is commonly used to measure how much a company is worth. This year, $AMZN crossed the borderline of $1.7 Trillion market cap for the first time.

The current price of $AMZN as of the time of this publication is at $168.64. Recently, Jeff Bezos sold roughly $2 billion worth of his Amazon stock according to financial filings. Despite this latest divestment, Bezos retains a significant stake in Amazon, holding approximately 964.2 million shares and representing 9.3% of the company’s outstanding shares. While stepping down as Amazon CEO in July 2021 and handing the reins to Andy Jassy, Bezos remained chairman. He has steadily transitioned his focus towards his space venture, Blue Origin, while gradually reducing his active role in Amazon’s management.

In the coming weeks, the price of $AMZN could fall to $120 as a result of Jeff’s huge sales of the shares.

Layoffs, A Probable Cause Of Amazon’s Drop In Share Price

Amazon's Layoffs Linked To Share Price Fall

Amazon’s share price since it reached its all-time high at $189.78 in July 2021, has been falling. In December 2022, price hit $81 which is the lowest price since March 2020. Currently, $81 is the support level.

As 2023 opened, price initially consolidated around the support level. But in the second week of January, a bounce occurred. This bounce lifted price to $114.22 by the second day of February 2023. This is the highest price that the Amazon stock has attained in 2023.

Monthly Chart

After this rally, price dropped. As at last week on the 13th, Amazon’s share price had fallen to $88.71, the lowest price so far this month. There was a bounce that took price to $100 but the bears suddenly kicked in. Our analysts have come to conclude that this bearish takeover was probably a result of the recent mass layoff by Amazon. With this recent layoff, Amazon has totaled 27,000 employees that it has laid off this year.

Taking all this into account, our analysts think the bulls will reclaim the reins from the bears soon and price will rise to $120 in the next few weeks.

Amazon’s Price in a Range

Amazon is an American multinational conglomerate that focuses on e-commerce, cloud computing, digital streaming, and artificial intelligence. The stock has done well for investors in the last decade, as an investment in $AMZN has generated over 19X. The share price of Amazon has maintained a resistance level at $2044 since September 2018, but the price broke out the resistance level to the upside in February 2020 to a new all-time high at $2913.18. After the break-out, there was a price correction before a major rally began to a new all-time high at $3770.49 and the support level is maintained at $2883.53.

Daily Chart

Since a support level was formed at $2883.53, the price of $AMZN has failed to break the support level to the downside as the price has been ranging between the support level and the all-time high at $3770.49 since mid-2020. Unfortunately, an Amazon warehouse was hit by a tornado, this week killing six, and an activist group targeting Exxon. In July and November of this year, $AMZN has formed a double top, could this be an indication of a correction. Using Amazon to shop could be a major option for shoppers if covid cases increase with the new variant ‘Omicron’, as the lockdown may be re-imposed.

Weekly Chart

RSI has shown that price has been overbought since the ease of lockdown in 2020. Despite the rally around to the all-time high at $3770.49, the price has crossed to the lower region of the Bollinger bands this month. For long-term investors, Amazon could be a good deal, just as it has done in the last decade.

Amazon Might Reach A New All Time High

Amazon share price fell badly towards the end of last year from 1965.54 to 1676.34. This fall might be as a result of the release of third-quarter earnings. Despite concerns about its forward guidance, price of $AMZN is beginning to rise which might make price reach the previous all time high of 2050.30. Throughout the month of May, the $AMZN price was in the lower region of the Bollinger bands. A breakout upwards occurred mid June and price has since then resumed to the upper region of the Bollinger bands. The trendlines have been broken after the dip.

As price rallies, Ichimoku has been able to show us a bullish future and a breakout upwards of the cloud has occurred. This indicates a significant bullish takeover. In April, RSI was able to show an overbought region before the dip. Now the oversold region has been shown on the RSI daily chart which signalled a rally. The efforts of the bulls might make price reach a new high in 2019
